The Letter A and Art

We had a full Monday back in Room 203. We started our day by collecting Friday Folders and taking care of our morning activities, including sorting lunches, attendance, calendar, the Pledge of Allegiance, the alphabet song, and more. Then we had some Handwriting Without Tears time, reviewing the letter E. We had a morning meeting and read "My 'A' Book" and brainstormed some "short a" words. We will focus on "A" as our letter of the week. As we were working, there was a fire drill. Fortunately, our class knew what to do. We quietly and calmly exited the building and met on the yard. When we got back, we worked on making a tactile "Apples on 'A's on an Alligator." We colored the alligator, then used apple stickers to trace the letter "A" from the top down. They look cool!  We ended our morning by having snack, recess, and then Art with Ms. Sundquist. She introduced the class to the room, her rules, and then had them practice making lines. We even got to take a line home!

After lunch, we recited our new poem of the week "Ring-Around the Rosies" and decorated some "Zero Heroes." Zero Hero appears in Room 203 every tenth day. Since today ,was the tenth day of kindergarten, we had to find ten Zero Heroes hidden in the room. We got a zero-shaped sticker as our prize. In Music, Miss Hanson had the class listen and follow directions with Teddy Bear and use different kinds of voice. After some phonics practice (letters, sounds, oral blending, and segmentation), we moved onto our theme of the week: colors. We read "My Crayons Talk" and then used primary colored paddles to "mix" colors with other students in the room by holding them together in the light. We followed that up by mixing those colors (red, yellow, blue) to find what color would appear. It was a little messy, despite our best efforts, but we did learn that read and yellow make orange, red and blue make purple, and blue and yellow make green.  Then we cleaned up, packed up, had some free choice time, and lined up for home. Let's have a great week!

Be sure to look over homework packets for the week. They include handwriting, phonics, math, a reading log, and a books report. Be sure to work neatly and return packets on Friday. A Scholastic book order is also attached. If you're interested, return forms with payment by Friday.
