Trying to Stay Cool

We had another extremely hot day in Room 2. We began our day outside with Nutrition, then came in and tried to stay cool. We took care of our morning activities before reading "Quick as a Cricket" and "E is for Elephant." At language arts rotations, students worked on "Short E" cut and paste phonics. My groups took the Topic 2 math test before making our own "Quick as a Cricket" book. Each page  included a simile, comparing a trait in ourselves to an animal. They're cute!  The other groups had their first secret center of this rotation. Centers include: Using pastels and paints to make a friend or family picture at the art center, playing games we learned at the Tech Lab at the computer center, writing the numbers from 0 to 10 at the math center, playing with cubes and Lincoln Logs at the play center, and writing friend words in a mini-book at the writing center. After recess, we recited "Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater" and wrote in our journals.

We ate lunch outside, but we were asked to stay inside for recess again. So we stayed cool and watched "Harold & the Purple Crayon: Blame it on the Rain" in air conditioned Room 2. Then we read "The Enormous Elephant Show" and had math. We worked on reading and writing 6 and 7.  Science was next. We reviewed what we learned last week about shadows and then made our own shadows using a projector. Students got to make a shadow using classroom objects and shadow puppets. It was fun! We also learned that a shadow gets bigger when the object gets closer to a light source and smaller when it gets farther from the light. When we were done, we had afternoon snack and some indoor choose time. At 1:30, we were supposed to have P.E., but because of the heat, Coach Angel came to us. We learned how to do cup stacking. Then we ended the day in the library. Mrs. Singh read us "My Grandfather and I" and "Bigger." When we got back to Room 2, we packed up our things, reviewed the homework, and lined up for home. Stay cool everyone!
