More with Sh and a Tornado Drill

We had a fancy Tuesday in Room 203. We began our day with our morning activities. We read some "sh" riddles, too. In our A to Z Countdown, it was "F is for Fancy." Many students definitely looked the part! We had some fancy hats, dresses, ties, shirts, and jewelry. Well done!  After Star of the Week and Road to Reading, we had Writer's Workshop. We introduced the class to opinion writing. We explained what opinions are, and how best to express them so that you convince others. We started a piece where we wrote if we like dogs or cats more, and then wrote why. We will continue our opinion writing through the end of the year. After snack and recess, we read a book on sea horses and had ELA Workshop. students at independent tables worked on "sh" phonics and sentences. My groups finished up a Mother's Day gift. We also started new secret centers. They include: Sea horse art at the Art Center, LexiaCore5 games at the Computer Center, subtraction practice at the Math Center, Sea Animal viewfinders at he Mystery Center, Make your own mini-book at the Reading & Writing Center, and playing with sea creature toys at the Science Center.

After lunch, we reviewed sight words, recited "Come to the Window," and finished up our Workshop activities. Then we had our run of Tuesday specials. We started in the library. Mr. Withers read us a funny story before we checked out a new book. Then we went to Spanish. Sra. Colmenero taught us more about the tropical rain forest and vocabulary that goes with it. On our way to P.E. there was a tornado drill. We found a wall next to the gym and covered our heads to stay safe. We did a great job!  We had practiced earlier in the day, and it helped. When we were done, we made our way to P.E. Mr. Simatic had us running and playing some fun games. To end the day, we finished up our Star of the Week time. Quinn shared some cool toys with the class. he had "Rock 'em, Sock'em Robots," a chess set, an octopus toy, and a little Minion (from the movie). The class liked them all. We even got a few minutes to play before we packed up, reviewed homework, and lined up for home.
