Writing How-To Stories

We had a good Thursday in Room 203. We began our day with our morning activities and by checking out our butterflies. We have seven now! We read a book called "Butterflies" and had Star of the Week. Miles shared some fun family pictures. They were testing in the Computer Lab, so we had Writer's Workshop next. We spent time writing another "How-To" story, this time focusing on something we know how to cook or prepare to eat. We worked on keeping event in order and adding caution words like "be careful," "don't forget to," or "be sure to" in our writing. We did a  great job! After snack and recess, we read "Butterfly Magic" and had ELA Workshop and centers. My groups wrote a friendly letter to Miles, our Star of the Week. Independently, students used iPads to play LexiaCore5 games since we didn't go to the Computer Lab earlier. We also visited a secret center.

After lunch, we reviewed sight words, recited "This Little Piggy," and practiced some phonics skills. We also took a math sprint on number bonds. We did a good job! After Music with Mrs. Hansen, we had math. We worked more with subtraction by crossing out objects to take away and then creating subtraction sentences from the number bonds. In Spanish, we learned more about the toucan and the jungle with Sra. Colmenero. To end the day, we cleaned up, finished up some unfinished projects and had a little free play. Then we packed up, reviewed homework, and counted super star sticks.

Be sure to finish, check over, and bring homework packets for Friday!

As mentioned above, the butterflies are doing well. We are up to  seven now. We've been feeding them fresh oranges each morning. Some students have been kind enough to read them butterfly stories, too. They are flapping their wings and flying in their homes quite a bit. We will be letting them go tomorrow afternoon.
