Shadows

We had a great Wednesday in Room 2. We began the day with Nutrition and our morning activities. Then we read "Detective Dog and the Disappearing Doughnuts" and came up with more "D" words. At language arts rotations, students worked on "D" words and pictures. My groups read "I Am Apple Picking" and worked on neat "D" handwriting. The other groups had secret centers. After recess, we had math. We worked on counting and correctly forming 6, 7, and 8.

After lunch, we recited "Hey Diddle, Diddle" and had science. Extending our last lesson on the sun, today we discussed shadows. We read "What Makes a Shadow?" and learned that a shadow needs three things: light, something to block the light, and a surface for the shadow to fall on. I made a few shadows with a flashlight in the class before students worked with a partner to find five shadows and make five shadows outside. It was fun!  When we came back in, we read "Guess Who's Shadow?" and figured out what objects were making shadows in the book. We ended our lesson by making min-books called "What Can Make a Shadow?" where we wrote the name of the object we saw making a shadow. Most students sounded out the words themselves!  After some well-earned choose time, we had P.E. with Coach Angel. He had us work on dribbling a ball with two hands (and later one hand) and going around cones. After a water break, we had library with Mrs. Singh. She read us "Happy Birthday Arthur" and "Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed."  Then we packed up, reviewed homework, sang "Wake Up Toes," and lined up for home.
