R Blends, Insects, and Reading Buddies

We had a pretty busy day in Room 2. We began with Nutrition and our morning business. Then we read "A Groundhog Named Grady" and brainstormed some more "tr," "dr," gr," and "pr" words. At language arts rotations, students worked on "R blend" phonics and sentences. My groups started writing in "My Insect Book" about, you guessed it, insects. The other groups had secret centers.  After recess, we practiced our sight words, recited "Hot Cross Buns," and had math. We discussed solid shapes today, looking at examples of solid shapes and noting how they differ from flat shapes.  Then we tried drawing a sphere, cube, cone, and cylinder. We finished by identifying matching solid shapes.

After lunch, we read "Grasshoppers" and "Beetles" while continuing our theme of insects. We then learned that some insects have wings and some do not. Then we tried to sort insects by those with wngs and those without. We completed a cut and paste to finish the lesson. After some choose time, we had Star of the Week. We reviewed what we know about Alexander. Then he shared some cool toys. Alexander had a Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles "pop-up" game, which was similar to Trouble. He also had ten different Hot Wheels cars and an Angry Birds puzzle. The class liked them all!  For P.E., we had a soccer kicking relay before ending the day with our Reading Buddies. We looked at books both inside and outside with our friends from Room 19. Then we put up our chairs, packed up, reviewed homework, and lined up for home.

Don't forget to bring your library books tomorrow!
