Necklaces and Sand Painting

We had a very fun Friday in Room 2. We began by collecting homework before having Nutrition and morning activities. Then we read "It's Thanksgiving Day!" At language arts rotations, students sewed a Native American inspired necklace. We used colored salad macaroni to create a patterned design. We tied them to paper clips on either end so that they can be easily hooked and unhooked. They should have made their way home today. Check them out!  My groups read "I Like, We Like" and wrote a friendly letter to Lila, our Star of the Week. The other groups had secret centers.  After recess, we recited "Little Nut Tree," did some rhyning, and had math. Today we looked at a Native American picture and counted the items we saw.

After lunch, we read "This is the Turkey" together. Then we tried sand painting!  First, we made a Native American design in pencil using our picture dictionary. Next, we traced over part of the design with wet glue. Third, we poured sand (we actually used jell-o, but sand with ground chalk works, too) on the glue. Fourth, we carefully poured it off to reveal our design in that color!  Then we repeated those steps on the other parts of our painting until it was finished. They look very cool!  After cleaning up our mess, we had Star of the Week. Lila had us estimate hair ties. There were 78 hair ties! Jayden made the best guess of 80.  We had P.E. on the kindergarten yard before ending the day with a popcorn party. We watched "The Magic School Bus Gets Cold Feet" and munched on a cup of popcorn. Then we packed up our Friday Folders, gave out prizes for 20 super star sticks, and passed out certificates for an all green week. Have a fantastic Thanksgiving holiday!

Remember that we are out of school until Monday, December 1st. Be sure to use your week to work on the Ethnicity Doll project. Students should try to talk with family members to learn about where their family is from. And be sure to work on the writing and reading part, too!
