The Letter D and the Return of Apple Guy (or Girl)!

We continued our study of the letter "D" Wednesday by completing another cut and paste phonics page. Some students even had time to write "d" words on the back of the page, which is fantastic! Later in the year we hope to turn those into sentences.  After snack and recess, we did some problem solving in math.  We talked about how using objects can help us better see and, and therefore, solve problems. We used unifix cubes as a class and then with a partner to order numbers and find which had the most.

In the afternoon, we started our study of apples in science. We read a book aptly titled "Apples" before creating Apple Guy (or Girl).  Earlier in the year, we made Shape Guy (or Girl), so the process was familiar to the students. First, we colored eyes, a mouth, a stem,  two hands, and two feet. Then, we cut those pieces out and put them in a ziploc bag so we wouldn't lose them. Next, we pasted the eyes, mouth,  and stem onto a red, green, or yellow apple shape. Then, we accordion-folded two arms and two legs. Finally, we attached the hands and feet to the apple. Viola! Apple Guy (or Girl)!

We ended the day by going to P.E. with Coach Angel. Mrs. Navarrette's class joined us because their regular time was during the Back to School Breakfast and we didn't want them to miss a week. Coach Angel showed eveyone how to bounce a ball with two hands, then had students walk and bounce the ball with control before handing off to a teammate. When we were done, we went back to class and make some quick lines out of glue for tomorrow's art project.  It was a productive day!
