"Dancing Raisins"

We had a pretty good Wednesday in Room 2. We began the day with Nutrition and our morning activities. Then we read "Worm's Wagon" and brainstormed more "W" words. At language arts rotations, students worked on "W" phonics and sentences. My groups tried writing a four line poem about a kind of weather. Again, it was a bit challenging, but I'm proud that we were all able to finish!  The other groups had their last secret center of this rotation. After recess, we had math. We looked at comparing height. Students used cubes to measure objects and  figure out what was taller or shorter.

After recess, we reviewed sight words, recited "Humpty Dumpty, and read "A Windy Day." We also sang "Head, Shoulder, Knees, and Toes." For Science, we had a water experiment called "Dancing Raisins." Students worked with partners as they dropped raisins in regular water (H2O) and carbonated water (7up). They observed what happened to the raisins in the water. Most saw that the raisins fell in the water, but went up and down in the 7up. We then figured out that the reason the raisins danced in the soda water was because of the air bubbles. It was fun!  We also made a quick tornado tube to examine together. For Star of the Week, Karma shared her favorite book, "Biggest, Strongest, Fastest." It was about the animals that are the biggest, strongest and fastest in the world.  At P.E., Coach Angel had the class play "Skyscrapers." The point of the game is to throw a ball over a volleyball net and knock down the other team's "skyscraper" of cones. Mrs. Singh is out this week, so we ended the day with some recess on the big yard. Then we put up our chairs, packed up, reviewed homework, and lined up for home.

We will perform our poem and song for grades 1-5 at the 1:15 African American Heritage assembly tomorrow. Parents are, of course, welcome to attend, but Ms. Nichols told me that she will have another opportunity just for parents to see our class perform the poem and song next month.
