Poinsettias and Popcorn

We had a fun day in Room 2. We began our Friday by collecting homework and having Nutrition. After morning activities, we read "Morris's Disappearing Bag." At language arts rotations, students made poinsettia art. We learned that they came from Mexico and became popular at Christmas because of their red and green leaves. We also found out that the flowers of the poinsettia are actually the tiny yellow parts in the center and they were named after the man that brought them to America. My groups read "Pam" and wrote friendly letters to Leland, our Star of the Week. The other groups started new secret centers. They include: candy cane art at the art center, Starfall and Planet Bravo games at the computer center, dot to dot numbers at the math center, Lincoln Logs, Magni-tiles, and new puzzles at the play center, and holiday word books at the writing center. After recess, we recited "Old Woman in a Shoe," did some rhyming, and had math. We reviewed Topic 7 on addition before introducing Topic 8: Understanding Subtraction.

After lunch, we read "Bear's Christmas Star," reviewed sight words, and shared Kayla's and Abby's Ethnicity Doll projects. They did a great job! Then we started a holiday tree project that we will finish next week. For Star of the Week, Leland had us estimate crayons. There were 50 crayons. Dashiell guessed it exactly! We had a short recess on the big yard before having a popcorn party to end the day. We did such a good job during our rainy days week that we earned it very quickly. We munched on a cup of popcorn while we watched "The Magic School Bus Gets Charged." It was about electricity. Then we packed up our Friday Folders and totem poles before passing out awards for earning twenty super star sticks and certificates for an all green week. Have a great weekend!

Don't forget to finish up Ethnicity Doll projects this weekend!  They are due on Tuesday, December 9th.
