Native American "Blankets" and "Sand" painting

Today was a rainy Thursday at Third Street. We ended up with a little more indoor class time than anticipated, but we did just fine. After morning business, we looked at our SRA big book. We named several geometric shapes and looked at a Native American blanket design. Then at language arts rotations, we made our own construction paper "blanket" using geometric shapes. At my table, we read "We Like Sam" and wrote a letter to Callum, our Star of the Week. The other two groups had secret centers. After indoor snack and indoor recess, we shared some PTA Reflections entries. Abbie and Finn made pictures. They both did a great job!  After that, we had math. We reviewed the plus sign and did some addition with sums of 2,3, 4, and 5.

After lunch, we had to come back on the room. We had a little time for book reading before we watched a Magic School Bus episode on the Solar System. Next, we looked at a book on Native American sand painting. We discussed the purpose and design of a sand painting. Then we each carefully drew a design. After that, students traced their lines with glue and poured "sand" (which was actually different colored Jell-o powder) on top of it. For Star of the Week, Callum shared some nice family photographs. At this point of the day, I decided that it was dry enough outside, so we had some free recess on the kindergarten yard. When we came in, we reviewed "Little Nut Tree" and celebrated Basia's birthday. She passed out goody bags to each child an the way home.

Don't forget to finish and look over homework packets tonight!
