The Letter A, Plus Shape Guy and Shape Girl

We had an excellent Monday back in Room 2. We began the day with Nutrition and our morning activities. Then we read "My 'A' Book" and brainstormed some words that start with the "short a" sound, as in apple. At language arts rotations, students created the tactile page "Apples on 'A's on an Alligator" using crayons and apple stickers. They look great! My groups worked on "A" handwriting, focusing on grip and proper form. Students should try and maintain a "tripod" grip and go down when making letters. Form and grip are much more important than neatness right now.  The other groups found their new secret centers. They include: Making a rainbow with dot stampers at the Art Center,  Tux Paint drawing at the Computer Center, Shape matching at the Math Center, Puzzles and blocks at the Play Center, and Matching letters of the alphabet at the Reading & Writing Center. After recess, we had math. We worked on counting to 4 and 5. We also used blocks to illustrate the numbers from 1 to 5.

After lunch, we read a book on shapes and reviewed our fifteen shapes. Then we started an art project to make "Shape Guy" or "Shape Girl." We began by coloring, decorating, and cutting out eyes, a mouth, hands, and feet. That took awhile, so we recited our poem "Ring Around the Rosies" and went out for P.E. on the big yard next. When we came back, we picked a shape to add our pieces to. We glued on the eyes and mouth, then folded arms and legs before gluing on the hands and feet. They look fun!  Finally, we cleaned up and passed out homework folders. Let's have a great week!

Be sure to look over homework packets. They include "A" handwriting and our poem for Monday, "Short A" phonics for Tuesday, Math homework for Wednesday, and our Reading Log and Book Report for Thursday. Complete it at your pace, but be sure to check it over and turn it in on Friday. A blue School Discipline Policy form and Emergency Kit bag are included, too.
