The Letter W
We had a fast Tuesday back in Room 2 today. We began the day by collecting Friday Folders and having Nutrition outside. When we came in, we took care of our morning activities which included: updating the calendar, our alphabet song, reciting our poem, naming the vowels, our phonetic alphabet, and morning exercises. Next, we read "My 'W' Book" and brainstormed "W" words. At language arts rotations, students worked on proper "W" handwriting and using crayons, glue, and gummy worms to make the tactile page "Worms on 'W's on a Window." My groups took the Topic 9 math test and read Sam and Mat book 3 together. The other groups had secret centers. After recess, we went to the Tech Lab. Mr. Scott had us play games that helped us with our keyboarding. They included Keyboard Climber and Cup Stacking. You can try them at home, too, by going to planetbravo.com/thirdstreet and clicking on kindergarten. When we got back to Room 2, we recited our new poem "Humpty Dumpty," learned our new sight words for the week, and introduced Topic 10 in math, which is on Composing and Decomposing Numbers 11 to 19.
After lunch, we edited two sentences together on the board to practice our reading and observational skills. Then we read "I Have a Dream," and illustrated book of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous speech. Then we colored a picture of Dr. King while we listened to the real speech from 1963. I thought it was a good way to start our study of important African-Americans during Black History Month. For Star of the Week, we introduced Ethan. He shared his very cool poster and took questions and comments from the class. To end the day, we had Reading Buddies. Mr. Bassett's class dropped by to look at books outside. Then we put up chairs, passed out homework, and lined up for home. Let's have a great week!
Be sure to look over homework packets for the week. A Science Fair informational packet is included. Projects are OPTIONAL, but encouraged. Each student that participates will receive ten (10) super star sticks and earn a special certificate for their effort. See me if you have any questions. Also, a sign up for our second Parent/Teacher conference has been posted. Please choose a time that is convenient for you.
