Leaves!
Our day started with some excitement, as the class noticed it was a Zero Hero day. We went through the calendar and then looked for (and found) the ten hiding Zero Heroes. I read "The Biggest Leaf Pile" and then showed class what we were going to do during rotations. Students drew leaf shapes in pencil, making sure to show the blade, midrib, stem, and veins. Then the traced over the leaf shape with oil pastels and used watercolor paints to fill them in. They came out nice and very colorful! At my table, we wrote a letter to our Star of the Week, Abbie. The other two groups had secret centers. After snack (where we got a Zero Hero treat) and recess, we had math. We practiced counting to 20 with a partner using unifix cubes. We also practiced reading, writing, and counting the numbers 18, 19, and 20.
After lunch, we recited the poem "Diddle, Diddle, Dumpling" and did letter and sound recognition activities. We also practiced sounding out short words. I read "Autumn Leaves" and then showed the class how to make a leaf rubbing. Students put leaves upside down under a piece of paper and used autumn colored crayons to make the rubbing. They came out well! For Star of the Week, Abbie shared some nice photographs of herself and her family. At P.E. we dribbled a bouncy ball around a cone and back as practice, and then as a race. When we came back to the room, Miss Diana read Abbie's copy of "Black Beauty" to the class. Then we packed up, practiced our Halloween song, and lined up for home.
Don't forget to finish, check over, and bring in your homework tomorrow!
