Seeds and Dr. Seuss' Birthday

We had a nice Wednesday in Room 2. We began our foggy day with Nutrition and our morning activities. We also read "A Xylophone for X-Ray Fish" and brainstormed more "X" words. At language arts rotations, students worked on a "mixed" phonics page and sentences. I also challenged students to use a word from the sheet and an "x" word in their sentences. My groups read "Tap, Tap, Tap!" and then wrote about what happened in "The Carrot Seed." We will attach our writing to carrots we sew on Friday. The other groups had secret centers. After recess, we read our first Dr. Seuss book of the day, "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish." We also had math. We looked at containers and compared capacity, seeing which held more and which held less.

After lunch, we reviewed sight words and recited "Baa, Baa, Black Sheep." Then we had science. We took apart and examined seeds with  a magnifying glass. Then we identified the parts of a seed: seed coat,  food storage, and the little plant (or embryo). I gave students a second chance to take apart another seed to see if they could find the baby plant (most did). We also got a Dr. Seuss searchword and coloring page. For Star of the Week, Kyle shared his big book of Dr. Seuss stories. Perfect, huh? We read "Maybe You Should Fly a Jet! Maybe You Should Be a Vet!" At P.E., Coach Angel had the class play "Steal the Bacon," as they raced to get the "bacon" before their opponent.  Mrs. Singh is out again this week, so we had a short recess on the big yard before ending the day with Dr. Seuss' "Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You?" Then we packed up, reviewed homework, and lined up for home.

We found out at the end of the day that they will be working on the kindergarten yard for the next week or so to replace the blue mat under the apparatus. While we still will enter and exit out the door by the yard, please tell your children not to play in that area before and after school until it is repaired. Thank you!
