Freight Train
We wrapped up our week with a busy and fun Friday in Room 2. We began our day by collecting homework, updating the calendar, and taking care of our morning business. We read the story "Bear in a Square" next. At language arts rotations, students cut and pasted like shapes. My groups wrote "I am..." sentences in their kindergarten journals. The other groups got choose time to read books, play math games, build with blocks, or put together puzzles. After snack and recess, we recited "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." Every student was able to read or sing it independently this week! At math we worked on counting the numbers 1, 2, and 3.
After lunch, we sang "Wake Up Toes" and finished up our math. Then we read the story "Freight Train" by Donald Crews and reviewed the colors of the different train cars. To reinforce the story, we created our own freight train. We cut out special engine and caboose pieces and glued rectangle pieces as the cars in between on a long sentence strip. Students also got to decorate the train cars with crayon. We had some indoor choose time while students finished their projects. Next we passed out Friday Folders (return them Monday!) and then cleaned up for home. To finish the day, we played some "Mr. Ricker Says" and handed out certificates for a great first week. Have a fantastic weekend!
