The Digraph Wh
We had a nice Monday back in Room 2. We began the day by collecting Friday Folders and having Nutrition outside. Then we took care of our morning activities and read "A Whistle for Willie." Next, we brainstormed some "wh" words because it's our digraph of the week. At language arts rotations, students worked on "Wh" handwriting and using crayons, glue, and wagon wheel pasta to make the tactile page "Wheels on 'Wh' on a Whistle." My groups read Sam and Mat book #7 and wrote in our kindergarten journals about seeds. The other groups had secret centers. After recess, we learned our new sight words for the week, practiced our new poem, "Oh Where, Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone?" and had math. We worked on problem solving by using logical reasoning. We examined objects, figured out how they were the same, and figured out what else would belong in that group.
After lunch, we read "Roots" and started a science experiment. Students put colored water in a cup with a celery stalk. We will examine them tomorrow and (hopefully) see how water defies gravity and rises up the stalk. This should illustrate how plants survive and pass water and nutrients throughout the plant. Next, we reviewed the parts of a plant and completed a cut and paste page labeling each part. Then we introduced A.J. as our Star of the Week. He shared a very cool poster and took questions from the class. At P.E., we practiced kicking in the grassy area outside our room. We tried to control our kicks as we went around a cone. To end the day, Dashiell shared a book with the class. Then we packed up, reviewed homework and our upcoming Animal Report & Diorama project, and lined up for home. Let's have a great week!
Be sure to check over homework packets for the week. Our final At-Home Project: The Animal Report & Diorama is due on May 13th. See the instruction sheet for more details. Also, Spring Picture Day is this Thursday. All students will be photographed, with parents getting the opportunity to buy pictures later. See me if you have any questions!
