The Letter N and Native American "Buffalo Hides"
Our day began as it normally does on Monday. We did calendar, reviewed our alphabet letters and sounds, said the pledge of allegiance, and did our morning exercises. Then I read "My N Book" to introduce our new letter of the week. For language arts centers, we did a tactile page - "Noodles on Ns on a Nut." At my table we started read the first Sam and Mat book called "I See Sam."We also did "N" handwriting and wrote "n" sentences. Other groups had secret centers. After snack and recess, we had math. We did a regular page on joining numbers and then practiced addition with sums of 4 and 5.
After lunch, we read "The True Story of Pocohontas." After reviewing what we know about Native Americans, we discussed how they were hunters. We learned how Native Americans care about nature and didn't waste any of the animals they hunted. Then we decorated paper "buffalo hides" using oil pastels. We tried to put images of nature, use Native American symbols, or shape patterns in our art. At P.E. we went to Dermody Court and tried to kick a ball under control and around a cone. We each got two turns and plan to race later in the week. Then we got a little free recess. To end the day, we learned our new poem "Little Nut Tree." We also did some rhyming, oral blending, and reviewed our Dolch sight words from the last two weeks. After a few minutes of choose time, we packed up for home!
Be sure to look over the homework packet this week. Our second At Home Project: "The Ethnicity Doll" went home today. Directions, writing paper, and a doll shaped cut-out are in your child's folder. See me if you have any questions or concerns, or need to see a sample.
