Masks! Masks! Masks!

Our Treasures Reading program mini-theme this week has been "Making Art."  We had three stories - "Make a Doll," "Masks! Masks! Masks!" and "Art in Caves."  We spent part of Tuesday and Wednesday making our own masks.  Students planned out their mask, cut out two eyes, colored, and then decorated their masks with paper, sticks, jewels, and other items.  Then we tied yarn along the back to make them wearable.  They came out even better than we had hoped! We extended the lesson by using a thinking map (in this case a flow map) to create some expository writing. Students used their first hand knowledge and this pre-writing activity to help make a paragraph explaining how to make a mask.  Most paragraphs are eleven sentences long!  The masks will be on display in the room next week, as well the student writing. I'll try to post a few pictures here, too.  Enjoy!
