The Sixteenth Week of Second Grade

We had another full week of learning in Room 104. We studied fairy tales, learned more about arrays in math, and shared our History Projects. Let's learn more!

Our ELA block of learning included a new list of words in the Words Their Way spelling program. During Reader's Workshop, we read more fairy tales like "The Three Little Pigs," "The Gingerbread Man," "The Rough-Face Girl," and more. We looked at setting, plot, character traits, and who is telling the story. We also tried reading like a storyteller, changing our voice for characters, and thinking about tone and feelings as we read. In Writer's Workshop, we read used our memory of fairy tales to plan and start writing our own fractured fairy tale. We based the story on the real fairy tale, but with some changes in setting, character, plot, or conclusion. We will finish and write more next week. We also continued cursive handwriting, accessed RAZ-KIDS, SeeSaw, and Lexia on our iPads, in small groups at W.I.N. time.

In Social Studies, we reviewed timelines and what we know about history. We spent the rest of the week sharing our History Projects. Students presented family trees, oral history reports, and "Past, Present, and Future Me" reports. We did a great job!  I plan to put projects on display in the hall or classroom for everyone to enjoy!

In Math, we continued our module on Foundations of Multiplication and Division. We reviewed equal groups, rows,  columns, and arrays. Then we worked on drawing arrays and made repeated addition and multiplication problems from those arrays.

We also had Music with Ms. Brown, read, wrote, learned Spanish with Sra. Colmenero, checked out new books in the library, finished Matisse-inspired art with Ms. Sundquist, and ran through obstacle courses in P.E. with Mr. Simatic. We even had Ben's mom visit as a guest reader on his birthday!

Have a great weekend!  See you back in Room 104 on Monday!
