The Twelfth Week of Second Grade

We had a full week in Room 104. We saw a puppet show, read and wrote non-fiction stories, and finished up our solids and liquids unit in science  Let's learn more!

Our ELA block of learning included a list of /u/ words, using short u /cvc/, long u /cvce/, plus ui and oo /cvvc/ words in the Words Their Way spelling program. During Reader's Workshop, we read more non-fiction and focused on finding and defining keywords and comparing different texts. We read more non-fiction books, including "Earthworms". In Writer's Workshop, we started new non-fiction books using a table of contents and other text features to make it fancy. We also practiced handwriting, accessed RAZ-KIDS and Lexia on our iPads, and practiced fluency and comprehension in small groups at W.I.N. time.

In Science, we finished up our unit on solids and  liquids this week. We observed the results of adding heat and cold to liquids and solids. We played a game called "Change it" to see how different objects changed (melted or froze) in the oven or a freezer. We also read and learned how some changes are reversible (water to ice), while others are irreversible (baking a cake, frying an egg). Finally, we took our investigation quiz on Friday (and did a nice job!).

In Math, we continued Module Three on Place Value, Counting, and Comparison of Numbers to 1,000.  We compared more forms of numbers using >, <,  and =.  We tried adding 1, 10, or 100 more by looking at that place value and adding one. We also tried subtracting 1, 10, or 100 less by looking at that place value and taking away one. Next week we will finish the module and take the final assessment on Wednesday. A practice test went home with the homework packet, so try it to make sure your child is ready. Thanks!

We also sang songs and had Music with Ms. Brown, read, wrote, and discussed descriptive words about ourselves and others in Spanish with Sra. Colmenero, checked out new books in the library with Mr. Withers, started new pictures in Art with Ms. Sundquist, and played floor hockey in P.E. with Mr. Simatic. Thursday included a special assembly called "The Kids on the Block." It was a puppet show that showed how students with different abilities can get along and succeed. It was sweet and enlightening!

Have a great weekend!  See you back in Room 104  on Monday!
