The Tenth Week of Second Grade

We had a spooky and short week in Room 104. We read and wrote non-fiction stories, experimented more with solids and liquids in science, and celebrated Halloween.  Let's learn more!

Our ELA block of learning included a list of /a/ words, using short a /cvc/, long a /cvce/, and  ai /cvvc/ in the Words Their Way spelling program. During Reader's Workshop, we read more non-fiction and tried to figure out the difference between topic and main idea. We read more "Knights in Shining Armor" and "Tigers" in class. In Writer's Workshop, we started non-fiction books coming up with topics we are experts in, and then working to structure readable information books. Phonics continues to focus on tackling challenging words. We also practiced handwriting, accessed RAZ-KIDS and Lexia on our iPads, and practiced fluency and comprehension in small groups at W.I.N. time.

In Science, we worked with both solids and  liquids this week. We took several solids and identified their properties. Then we added water to each and observed how they changed overnight. Most changed! Some disappeared altogether, some got softer, some got darker, some got bigger. Thursday we poured them into a cup and will see if they change when the water evaporates over the weekend. We also will add water to different liquids to see if they change next week!

In Math, we continued Module Three on Place Value, Counting, and Comparison of Numbers to 1,000.  We worked on standard forma (348) and word form (three hundred forty eight) before turning our focus to counting from 10 to 1,000. We came up with strategies to count up using ones, tens, and hundreds. We also worked with a partner to find a way to see how many tens go into 1,000. Next week we use place value disks to count and look at greater than, less than, and equal to.

We also had  Music with Ms. Brown, learned about Dia De Los Muertos in Spanish with Sra. Colmenero, checked out new books in the library with Mr. Withers, got to paint in a special Art class with Ms. Sundquist, and played more fun games in P.E. with Mr. Simatic. Our Thursday included the Halloween parade and party, too. Special thanks to Reid's mom for planning the party and all of our parent volunteers that helped out: Grace's mom, Abbie's mom, Sa'Daree's mom, Ben P's mom and dad, Avery's mom and dad, Winter's dad, Reid's mom, and Sofia's mom. Thank you so much!

Students got Friday off for the Teachers' Institute, so have a great three-day weekend!  See you back in Room 104  on Monday!
