Week Six

We had an eventful week in Room 104! We had a field trip on Tuesday, Picture Day on Thursday, and started World Culture on Friday. Plus, we had another week of learning!

Our ELA Block included our third week of spelling and the start of handwriting. We are practicing good grip and good form as we write. Keep reinforcing those ideas at home on your homework. In RUOS, we worked on checking ourselves as we read, looking at author's intentions, and identifying craft moves that writers use to make their writing interesting. WUOS had some complementary topics, including emulating authors in the way they write, mining texts for word choice, and learning to write in more powerful ways. We're really focusing on making our writing more detailed in our description, actions, and dialogue. We reinforced that in Language with a lesson on using quotation marks.

In our afternoon block, we finished up our Neighborhood unit in Social Studies with our field trip, a review game, and a short unit test. We began Science and talked about the them of Solids and Liquids. We had an experiment where we identified solid objects by their properties. We also started our science journals, where we will post our findings.  In math, we continue to look at measurement. We worked on developing our estimation strategies, measuring and comparing, and using a ruler to measure and compare. We will wrap up Module Two next week.

Our field trip was a nice walk to the Oak Park River Forest Museum on Lake Street. We got a chance to learn more about the history of our neighborhood. (I'll try and add another post about it!) Picture Day was Thursday. We got to take our class picture on the playground apparatus, so I look forward to seeing it soon! World Culture education will come once a month starting today. Ms. Jodi came by to introduce herself and tell the class a little about the first Americans, Native Americans. She had some artifacts and stories to share, too.

And of course, we had our specials. We continued more detailed drawings in Art with Ms. Sundquist. We learned some new songs, and played games and instruments in Music with Ms. Altshuler. We practiced our words and phrases used to describe people this week in Spanish with Sra. Colmenero. We read a story and checked out new books in the Library with Mr. Withers. And, as always,  we played some awesome games and got some exercise with Mr. Simatic in P.E.

It was a great week!  See you on Monday!
