Week Five

We had another good week in Room 104.  We had an assembly on Monday, a substitute teacher on Tuesday, and started Reading Buddies on Friday. Plus, we learned quite a bit!

Our ELA Block included more spelling with Words Their Way, culminating with our second spelling test on Friday. Keep practicing at home and try those activities at Spelling City! In RUOS, we looked at beginning, endings, and the middle of words to help figure out what they are. We learned some new strategies to sound new words out, too. We ended the week with a comprehension check on the book "The Most Magnificent Thing." WUOS topics included revising with intent, close reading, and learning to write in powerful ways. We discover that describing what we see, hear, and smell can add to our writing. In language, we talked about subjects and predicates.

In our afternoon block, math focused on measuring. We connected measurement with physical units by using centimeter cubes. We made centimeter rulers,  being careful to make each length the same. At the end of the week, we found out that using meter sticks helps when trying to measure larger or longer objects. In Social Studies, we wrote a paragraph on what a neighborhood is, created a map of a playground, followed a treasure map to fins a surprise, and read what urban, suburban, and rural areas are. We finish our unit next week with our field trip. A switch to Science will be next!

Of course, that wasn't all. We started our week with that assembly on Mexican heritage, which was full of music and dance. We had our first substitute while Mr. Ricker did some BAS testing on Tuesday. We finished up our "American Gothic" themed pictures with Ms. Sundquist in Art. We sang songs and played instruments with Mrs. Altschuler in Music. We learned about mariposas in Spanish with Sra. Colmenero. We read a story and checked our books with Mr. Withers in the Library. And, as always, we played some fun games and got some exercise with Mr. Simatic in P.E. Oh, we even started Reading Buddies with Mr. Manus' class on Friday.  We hope to plan some fun activities with them throughout the year!

Looking forward to next week, we have our field trip and Picture Day. Have a great weekend!  See you on Monday!
