Week Fifteen

We had a snowy week in Room 104.  Our Monday turned into a Snow Day, much to the delight of everyone. We spent the rest of the week catching up with our fiction and fairy tale units in reading and writing, plus starting a new math module on the foundations of multiplication.

Our ELA Block included new spelling lists and more cursive writing. We're doing a great job. Keep practicing at home! This week we learned how to write a"b" and an "h." We will keep practicing good form next week. In RUOS, we began a new "If/Then" unit called Studying Characters and Their Stories. We focused much of the week on fairy tales, characters, setting, and retelling the story. We also looked at story mountains, finding how a story climbs to a high point where the problem is solved. In WUOS, we also read fairy tales and identified the key elements in each. We noticed the consistent appearances of "once upon a time," magic, good winning over bad, "threes," and teaching the reader a lesson. We will use our knowledge of these fairy tales to write our own fractured fairy tales next week!  Lastly, we talked about action verbs in language.

In our afternoon block, we continued our unit in Social Studies on history. We reviewed timelines, historical sources, past present, and future, and looked at some artifacts from Beye School. Next week we will share our own artifacts and history projects, plus wrap up the unit. Don't forget that projects are due on Monday!  In math, we began module 6 on the foundations of multiplication and division. We used disks and drawings to create equal groups, practiced repeated addition (2+2+2=6, 3+3+3=9), and made tape diagrams to represent equal groups. We also practiced counting by 2s, 3s, 4s, and 5s to prepare to multiply. And of course we had our math centers and workshop.

We also had some of our cool specials, too. We missed Art with the snow day, but we had a lot of fun in Music with Ms. Altshuler. We talked more about school in Spanish with Sra. Colmenero. We read a story and checked out books with Mrs. Frost and Mrs. Alexander in the library. We played on scooters and tried some fun games in P.E. with Mr. Simatic. We also met up with our Reading Buddies in Mr. Manus' class.

Finally, we had a new student "Star of the Week." We spent the week learning about Elora. She made a poster, told us her favorite things, and brought in some cool artifacts to share. The class enjoyed getting to learn all about her!  We also made postcards on Friday for Elora! It was a fun week!

Looking ahead, we have History Projects sue on Monday, and will have first trimester report cards go home Friday. Have a great weekend!
