The Sixth Week of Second Grade

We had a busy week in Room 104. We built our reading, writing, and math skills, and started a new unit in science. Let's learn more!

Our mornings included spelling through the Words Their Way program and our morning meetings. We studied words with the short and long u in them, taking note of the silent e. Students have been sharing their "All About Me" posters each day.  This week we learned about Vivienne, Josie, Ben S., Winter, and Maya. During our ELA block, we focused more on character traits, retelling, and powerful craft moves. We finished reading "Mercy Watson to the Rescue" during Read Aloud and "That is Not a Good Idea" for Shared Reading. In Writer's Workshop, we started new narrative stories. We tried to add craft moves like dialogue, comparisons, and other powerful words and feelings. Phonics continues to involve capitals, punctuation, and homophones. We also practiced handwriting, accessed RAZ-KIDS on our iPads, read and studied characters at W.I.N. time.

Afternoons included our new Science unit, Math, and our specials each day. In Science, we learned that the world is made up of matter. That matter can come in three forms: solid, liquid, and gas. We spent the week observing solids, identifying their properties, and discovering what materials they were made of. We will look at comparing the properites of solids and creating a tower structure next week. In Math, we continued Module Two on Measuring Length. We used traditional rulers and meter sticks to measure objects. We also used benchmark objects such as pencils , paper clips, and our pinky finger to estimate length. We measured and solved word problems, too. Next week we plan to finish the module and assess. We also got to visit Music with Ms. Brown, learn about birthdays and seasons in Spanish with Sra. Colmenero, check out books in the library with Mr. Withers, create some Art with Ms. Sundquist, and play awesome games in P.E. with Mr. Simatic.

Have a great weekend!  See you back in Room 104 on Monday!
