The Eighth Week of Second Grade






We had a fun week in Room 104. We finished up our reading and writing units, started a new math module on place value, and worked with liquids in science.  Let's learn more!

Our ELA block of learning included a review list of spelling words through the Words Their Way program. We studied words with the short and long vowels in them, taking note of the silent e. During Reader's Workshop, we reviewed genre, vocabulary, retelling, and lessons learned in our reading. We read "Big Al" during Read Aloud and "The Empty Pot" for our final assessment. We also recorded ourselves on the SeeSaw app reading"Boo! Katie Woo!" to check our fluency.  In Writer's Workshop, we picked our best narrative story to edit, revise, make a cover, and share with the class. Stories will be on our bulletin board in the class next week.  We also got a chance to show off our writing skills by creating a final narrative story on Friday.  Phonics instruction was around rhymes and rhyming words. We also practiced handwriting, accessed RAZ-KIDS on our iPads, figured out the lesson of a story we read, and practiced fluency and comprehension in small groups at W.I.N. time.

In Science, we continue to study matter. We learned about liquids this week. We observed how liquids are different from each other. Then we looked at ways to describe different liquids. We learned the terms transparent, translucent, with color, viscous, bubbly, and foamy. We held and noted which properties were held by a variety of different liquids. Next week we will discuss how liquids change in containers.

In Math, we began Module Three on Place Value, Counting, and Comparison of Numbers to 1,000.
We bundled popsicle sticks to build ones, tens, and hundreds. We used these visual cues to count and identify numbers. We found out that 10 ones = 1 ten, 10 tens= 1 hundred, and 10 hundreds=1 thousand. From there, we worked on counting up from larger numbers. We tried finding the easiest (and quickest) path to a larger number by counting using ones, tens, and hundreds. For example, to go from 97-300, you'd count: 97, 98, 99, 100, 200, 300. We continue to practice counting up and down between 90 and 1,000. Next week, we focus on more counting, plus identify the value of each digit in three-digit numbers.

We also had Music, learned descriptive words in Spanish with Sra. Colmenero, checked out books in the library with Mr. Withers, painted in Art with Ms. Sundquist, and did some wall climbing in P.E. with Mr. Simatic.
