The Second Week of Second Grade

We had a busy second week of second grade in Room 104. We spent our week learning more school rules, practicing new routines, and getting started in our curriculum. Let's learn more!

We didn't have school with Labor Day on Monday, and our Tuesday morning began with PBIS stations. Students learned appropriate school behavior on the playground, in the bathroom, in the auditorium, in the Commons, and in the hallway. Otherwise, our mornings were spent focusing on our ELA block. We've been starting our days with some handwriting practice until spelling begins. Students have been working on grip, form, and consistency in our letters.  We have a new Phonics Unit of Study (PUOS) program. We introduced the program, looking for words in our words, plus the rule of the silent e. Reading Units of Study (RUOS) worked on how we read stories, taking a sneak peek, and building our reading stamina. Keep reading every day at home! Writing Units of Study (WUOS) introduced the idea of tiny topics to help us stretch one small idea into a bigger story. Everyone came up with a list of ideas before picking one to turn into a story.

Afternoons have been fun. They include Social Studies, Math, and our specials each day. In Social Studies, we are learning out where we are on a map. We have been identifying our home, city, and state so far. We will look for our country, continent, and planet as we expand out next week. In Math, we began Module One on adding and subtracting numbers to 100. We worked on making tens: 5+5, 4+6, 3+7, 2+8, 1+9, etc. This will help us as we work on adding and subtracting larger numbers. Keep using flash cards at home!  We also got to check out books in the library, visit Spanish with Sra. Colmenero, start some Art projects with Ms. Sundquist, play games in P.E. with Mr. Simatic, and meet our new music teacher Miss Brown.

Overall it was a productive week. Enjoy your weekend!  See you back in Room 104 on Monday!
