Week Ten

We had a good week in Room 104.  We continued our reading and writing units on non-fiction, worked a lot with place value and numbers in math, and had more investigations into solids and liquids in science. We had a couple of short days for Parent/Teacher Conferences, too!

Our ELA Block included our seventh week of spelling and our fifth week of handwriting.  In RUOS, we continued our "Becoming Experts" unit focused on identifying the main ideas in a nonfiction chapter or text. We looked at books and tried find keywords, too. We will continue to focus on nonfiction lingo, as well as using nonfiction text features like glossaries, diagrams, and vocabulary boxes. In WUOS, we tried more non-fiction writing on our own. We also worked on making a "How-To" story together to learn the proper form and transition words. We develop even more detailed writing next week!

In our afternoon block, we investigated mixtures in Science. We observed what happens when you mix a solid to a liquid. We had some cool results! We also observed when you mixed two different liquids together.  Of course, the most interesting results were with oil and water. We started to observe what happens when the water evaporates out of a mixture, but need more time to see the final result. We will check them on Monday. In math, we worked more on place value and counting. We counted numbers and dollar values up to $1000 by ones, tens, and hundreds. We learned that ten hundreds make a thousand, and so does 100 tens! We looked at numbers in standard form (368), unit form (368=3 hundred, 6 tens, 8 ones), expanded form (368=300+60+8), and word form (three hundred sixty-eight.

We also had some fun specials, too. We painted pictures with tempera in Art with Ms. Sundquist. We learned some cool new songs in Music with Ms. Altshuler. We described family members in Spanish with Sra. Colmenero. We read a story and checked out books in the Library. We had some fun games in P.E. with Mr. Simatic. We also had a "Kids on the Block" puppet show assembly where students learned about students with disabilities and visited the Book Fair in the Commons. It was a pretty great week!

Looking ahead, we celebrate Halloween this Wednesday. We will have a parade and party after lunch. It should be a lot of fun. Have a great weekend!
