Elmer the Elephant

We had an excellent Thursday in Room 203. We spent our morning working on the "short e" sound by reading "The Best Nest," and sounding out and finding "short e" words. We had a quick Reader's Workshop where we read storybooks with a partner because we were visited by Mrs. Buckley's first graders. They had some stories of their own to share, so we partner read with them for a bit. We went to the Computer Lab next to play some LexiaCore5 games. We did much better logging in this time!  I will give your child's info at P/T Conferences if you'd like to try it at home! After snack and recess, we started our Elmer the Elephant project.

After lunch, we recited "Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater," acted out "Wake Up Dad!" and sang "Tony Chestnut." Instead of math, we read "Elmer," a story about a patchwork elephant. We came up with a word to describe Elmer, tried to sound it out, and then made our own patchwork elephant using crayons, glue, and colorful tissue paper. They look cute!  For Science, we began a new FOSS unit on Trees and Weather by going outside to observe some trees. We found the trunk, roots, branches, and leaves. Next, we went to Art with Ms. Sundquist. We made more cool line pictures using glue and construction paper. We ended the day celebrating Nora's birthday. Her mom and dad came in and read "No Matter What" to the class. They even gave everyone a goody bag!  Thank you!

We do not have school tomorrow because of the Teacher Institute Day, plus we don't have school on Monday for Columbus Day. Enjoy the four-day weekend, and remember that we have Picture Day on the Tuesday we get back!
