Taste Experiment

We've been learning about the 5 senses in science.  This week we're focusing on taste.  In class, we read a book about taste and then conducted a "Yum or Yuck" experiment.  Students tasted a pumpkin seed (salty), apple (sweet), dark chocolate (bitter), lemon (sour), and Hot Cheetos (spicy). We discussed the flavor of each, where on the tongue we tasted it, and then voted if we liked the food (Yum) or did not like the food (Yuck).  The students we're very excited and motivated, to say the least. Here are the results of our experiment: 

Pumpkin seeds: Yum-20, Yuck-2
Apple: Yum-22, Yuck-0
Dark Chocolate: Yum-21, Yuck-1
Lemon: Yum-16, Yuck-6
Hot Cheetos: Yum-17, Yuck-5

I think the results were a little skewed, as students seemed very happy to eat anything during science class.  I was particularly surprised at the lemon tally.  Anyway, we had a lot of fun!
